Overview for The Venture’s Associate
The purpose of this role is to help the Venture’s team to identify, research, and analyze the highest-potential prospective investments. This person will be responsible for understanding markets and discovering spaces ripe for venture investment, identifying potential investments, and documenting the investment decision making process. As a member of the investment team, the associate is active in all aspects of investments, working closely with other members of the Venture’s team and the leaders of the Venture’s portfolio companies. This person will be expected to establish close and lasting relationships with key entrepreneurs, investors, operators, and service providers.
Role Responsibilities
• Deal Flow: Proactively source and screen potential companies in which to invest based on the Venture’s criteria. This includes finding and building relationships with entrepreneurs, analyzing business plans, updating information in internal systems, participating in deal flow meetings, creating detailed financial models and other supporting documentation per the firm’s process, meeting and interviewing management, customers, suppliers, and industry experts, and summarizing all diligence efforts.
• Making the Case for Investments: A core responsibility of the Associate is to build fact patterns and argue with confidence for and against potential investments. Every member of the team is expected to bring thoughtful opinions to the table.
• Business Development: Prospect for potential investments using various direct methods such as calling, face to face meetings, and indirect methods such as networking.
• Portfolio Support: Support portfolio companies as needed with industry, competitor, or financial analyses; and in select cases joining company board meetings as an observer.
• Reporting: Assist with quarterly and annual reporting documents.
• Marketing: Create or assist with the Venture’s marketing efforts, whether it be social media, blog posts, newsletters, or formal reports.
Candidate Characteristics
Candidates should have at least five years of prior work experience. You may have been (among other things:
• A top contributor in a functional role (sales, marketing, product, engineering) within a high-growth startup.
• An entrepreneur.
• An analyst or associate in investment banking, management consulting, private equity, or another venture capital firm.
• A law student or a Ph.D. candidate who decided to take a different route.
Qualified candidates likely also meet the following criteria:
• Self-starter with superior work ethic and uncompromising personal integrity.
• Highly analytical with an interest in sifting through, and identifying trends.
• A high level of familiarity with financial statements and the ability to build a three-statement financial model.
• Demonstrated ability to thrive in an entrepreneurial environment with limited supervision (including proactively seeking guidance when needed).
• Undergraduate degree from a top-tier institution, and a demonstrated track record of both academic and professional success.
• A demonstrated interest in venture capital.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
